Rock and Rolls Music The United States is the origin of rock and roll music. It evolved as a popular music in the 1940’s and 1950’s from a combination of Afro-American genres such as jazz, blues, country music, gospel music. Rock and roll music has some elements that are evident in blues and country music of 1920’s. However, Rock music attained its status and name in 1950’s. Saxophone and Piano were the first instruments to be used in the performance of rock and roll music but were later supplemented by the guitar in the late 1950’s (Marvin and Hermann, p56). The music is comprised of blues rhythm and backbeats as well as background snare drum sounds. During that particular time, there was a massive rural-urban migration of African Americans who were former slaves to major cities such as New York, Memphis, Chicago, Detroit Buffalo and Cleveland. African and White Americans were now living in close proximity, and they started emulating each other’s way of living regarding fashion and music. This phenomenon led to the cultural collision. The white Americans took African American styles of music such as swing, jazz and blues and rebranded them for the white market through the creation of hybrid and white forms of music. The invention of the electric guitar was important in the evolution of rock and roll music because it provided the necessary volume needed to match the band’s rhythm requirements (Stuessy and Lipscomb, p98). There was the development of fender electric guitar that produced a clean sound. It was simple in design, easy to assemble and cheap to acquire. The innovations transformed the sounds of jazz, rhythm and blues hence creating the necessary environment for the emergence of rock and roll music. The first rock and roll audiences were usually teenagers who used to gather after schools. Some would listen in the comfort of their homes through their transistor radios.
